Eugenio Derbez has issued a public apology to Selena Gomez for his “careless comments” regarding her performance in the musical film Emilia Pérez. The comedian, who previously criticized Gomez’s acting on a podcast, took to TikTok to express regret and clarify his stance.

“Dear Selena, I truly apologize for my careless comments,” Derbez began in his video. “They are indefensible and go against everything I stand for.” He acknowledged the mistake, stating, “As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.”

Derbez also addressed his criticism of the film and the actress, expressing that his remarks were unjust. “Emilia Pérez deserves to be celebrated, not diminished by my thoughtless remarks,” he continued. “I’m walking away from this with an important lesson learned. While I understand if you cannot accept my apology, please know it comes from the heart,” the Coda actor added.

The controversy stemmed from Derbez’s comments on the Hablando de Cine podcast, where he openly criticized Gomez’s performance, particularly her use of Spanish in the movie, despite not being fluent. “Selena is indefensible,” he said, recounting his viewing experience. “I was there [watching the movie] with people, and every time a scene came [with her in it], we looked at each other to say, ‘Wow, what is this?’” He further suggested that only Spanish-speaking viewers would notice the performance’s flaws.

Selena Gomez responded to the criticism, defending herself in a statement on social media. “I understand where you are coming from. I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie,” she said.

She also addressed Derbez’s comments about her fans, adding, “Also do not ever say my fans are the problem standing up, as you say, for me.” Derbez’s apology comes after public backlash from Gomez’s supporters, and both actors are now seeking to move past the situation.
