A woman, identified only as Brittany, has undergone multiple amputations after “flesh-eating” strep throat bacteria entered her bloodstream, leading to a life-altering medical crisis. The mother of a 12-year-old son, Brittany was rushed to the emergency room with severe abdominal pain just a week before Thanksgiving this year.
Doctors discovered she was in septic shock caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS), the same bacteria responsible for strep throat. The bacteria spread through her body, attacking her extremities and forcing surgeons to perform a series of life-saving amputations while she was unconscious.

When Brittany finally awoke a week later, she learned that both her legs, her left hand, and half of her left forearm had been removed. Her family shared the heartbreaking news on a GoFundMe page, stating, “It was heartbreaking when she was finally conscious enough to be aware of her body and discovered the devastating reality.”
While her right hand was spared, the damage and loss of sensation in most fingers have made even simple tasks like brushing her teeth or holding a fork a struggle. Brittany is expected to remain in the hospital for at least another month, where she will work to regain her strength and “relearn how to live as independently as possible.”
Her family describes Brittany as a fighter, artist, and devoted mother to her son, Rowan. On the GoFundMe page, they wrote, “Britt is a warrior with a beautiful smile and an indomitable spirit. She’s immensely talented and creative—an artist, photographer, pianist, and gardener. She’s also a loving partner to her fiancé, Adrean, and an amazing parent to her 12-year-old.”
The family is raising funds to cover Brittany’s medical expenses, home modifications, and future needs, including a motorized wheelchair, an accessible van, in-home care attendants, and high-quality prosthetics. Despite the challenges, Brittany remains determined to regain her independence and even dreams of hiking and skiing again.
