Nicole Kidman Reveals Key to Long-Lasting Marriage with Keith Urban: “No Texting”

Australian actress Nicole Kidman has been happily married to country singer Keith Urban since 2006, a rarity in Hollywood where celebrity couples often split. In a 2023 episode of the Something To Talk About podcast, the Aquaman star revealed the secret to their long-lasting marriage: they don’t text each other.
“We never text each other, can you believe that?” Kidman shared. “We started out that way – I was like, ‘If you want to get a hold of me, call me.’ I wasn’t really a texter.” Early in their relationship, Urban attempted texting, but Kidman wasn’t responsive.
So, they agreed to communicate via calls and FaceTime instead. “We just do voice-to-voice or skin-to-skin, as we always say. We talk all the time and we FaceTime, but we just don’t text because I feel like texting can be misrepresentative at times. I don’t want that between my lover and me,” Kidman explained to Parade.
Kidman and Urban first met in 2005 at an event in Los Angeles, and according to PEOPLE, their connection was immediate. “It was my 38th birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York,” Kidman recalled in 2019. “That’s when I thought, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.'”
According to The U.S. Sun, Within a year of meeting, the couple wed in Australia, and in 2024, they celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary. They have two daughters together, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, and despite their demanding careers, they prioritize family life.
“I remember talking to somebody once and they were like, ‘What do you do?’ I’m like, ‘Well, primarily I have my family, I raise my kids, and I work,'” Kidman told PEOPLE. “I’m raising a soon-to-be 16-year-old and a 13-year-old who are divine. They’re just lovely people and I’m so lucky that I have Keith. That gives me the ability to go and do whatever I have to do because I know where I can come back.”
Before her marriage to Urban, Kidman had experienced her share of heartbreak. She was in a long-term relationship with Lenny Kravitz and had previously been married to her Days of Thunder co-star Tom Cruise, a marriage that ended in divorce in 2001. Despite her past, Kidman has found lasting love with Urban, and their unique approach to communication is a key part of their success.
