Jessica Simpson Starts Over in Nashville After Split and Public Scrutiny

Jessica Simpson is embracing a new chapter of her life, revealing that a recent move to Nashville, Tennessee, has given her the emotional and creative reset she’s long needed. The singer and fashion mogul opened up in a candid interview with Rolling Stone, sharing how the change of scenery has helped her heal from years of personal and public challenges.

“It’s been so amazing to remove myself from my life as it was,” Simpson said. “Because it’s hard for me to be creative when I’m taking care of everybody. And it’s hard for me to convince myself that I needed to be selfish as a mother and as a business owner.”

“I had to literally uproot myself,” she added, explaining the bold decision to start fresh in a new city. In January, Simpson confirmed her separation from husband Eric Johnson, stating the two had been living apart for some time. Though the exact timeline of their split remains private, Simpson emphasized their continued focus on co-parenting their three children.

“Eric and I have been living separately, navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” she told People. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them.” A source close to the couple added that they “very much live separate lives,” with Simpson now splitting her time between Los Angeles and Nashville to work on new music, while Johnson remains in LA with their children.

Reflecting on her early pop career, Simpson revealed the pressure she felt trying to compete with contemporaries like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. “I was never going to win because I had someone like Britney and Christina ahead of me,” she said. “I didn’t want to dance, I didn’t want to wear a head mic… I felt like I was constantly letting people down—even myself—probably because I wasn’t singing words I wrote.”

It wasn’t until she began writing her own music that she found her voice, scoring her first No. 1 hit with “With You.” Simpson has also been open about her struggles with body image. In 2022, she posted on Instagram, “I have gained and lost 100 lbs three times… but I’m finally spring breakin’ wearin’ a BIKINI!!!!!!”

Still, the trauma from public fat-shaming—especially after the infamous 2009 “mom jeans” moment—lingers. “That was literal fat-shaming,” Simpson said, admitting the media scrutiny left her with lasting PTSD. Now, from her new home in Nashville, she’s focused on honesty, healing, and reclaiming her voice—both in life and in music.
