Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are facing a challenging divorce as their mediation officially kicks off. Lopez, 55, filed for divorce from her husband of two years on August 20, and now there’s speculation that she may regret skipping a key step before their marriage.
According to a source cited by People magazine, the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement, which could complicate the divorce proceedings. “The process has the potential to get ugly,” the insider shared. Both Affleck and Lopez, who are successful business owners with substantial assets, will face difficulties in dividing their joint financial interests.
Under California law, any property and assets acquired during the couple’s two-year marriage are considered community property and will be subject to division. This could prove to be a sticking point for the former Gigli co-stars, especially as they own several high-value assets together.
The couple is working with renowned divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who previously represented Kim Kardashian. According to reports, there are already “some sticking points over financials.” Notably, Lopez’s divorce petition, filed on their second wedding anniversary, claimed that the couple’s total assets were “unknown” to her at the time.
The division of their wealth is far from insignificant. Their shared assets include a Beverly Hills mansion they purchased in 2023, which they listed for $68 million in July. Additionally, both have earned millions individually from their film careers, endorsements, and other ventures, which could further complicate the financial negotiations.
While the financial matters may slow the process, sources close to the couple say that both Affleck and Lopez are eager to move forward with their lives. “He’s happy with how it’s coming along. He’s where he wants to be in a neighborhood that he loves. He is very focused on the positives,” one insider told the outlet, referring to Affleck.
Similarly, Lopez is reportedly adjusting to her new chapter. “The divorce is difficult for her, but she always finds a way to move forward,” a source shared. Despite the challenges ahead, both stars appear determined to move on from their marriage and focus on their futures.
