Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi’s dream of a quieter life in Britain is quickly turning into a nightmare as they face fierce opposition from locals over their plans to renovate their newly purchased historic farmhouse.
The couple, who spent $18 million on a countryside estate in England’s Cotswolds, have drawn criticism from neighbors who are unhappy with their modernization plans.

“The locals are cranky over their plans to modernize their property,” a source told Radar Online. “Most folks would like nothing more than to see them move out. A lot of people in England can trace their family tree back over a thousand years, and they don’t take kindly to outsiders coming in and disturbing the peace.”
The challenges extend beyond just neighborhood disputes. Insiders claim the couple’s marriage is also under strain. “Ellen and Portia’s neighbor battle is the least of their worries – Ellen’s dead showbiz career has plunged her into a funk, and Portia has been dragged into it too. Their relationship isn’t looking good,” an insider revealed.
The couple had hoped that moving to the U.K. would offer them a fresh start and respite from the scrutiny Ellen faced in the U.S. following her controversial exit from daytime television. However, adjusting to a new country and dealing with community resistance has only added to their stress.

Their renovation plans have also raised concerns over potential environmental risks, including flooding, as well as the possible destruction of historic Roman remains on the property.
“Ellen has done a complete overhaul on just about every property she’s owned in the States, but it’s a different ball of wax in the U.K.,” the source added, noting that strict regulations make renovations on historic properties far more complicated.

The couple’s recent sale of their Montecito mansion for $32 million allowed them to relocate overseas, reportedly in an attempt to escape the U.S. political climate. However, sources suggest they may already be second-guessing their decision.
“Ellen’s got to be wondering if they made a terrible mistake,” an insider explained. “One of the reasons she wanted to get out of the U.S. was to escape the negativity. She really thought things would be better, not worse.” With rising tensions in their new community and growing personal struggles, DeGeneres and de Rossi’s future in the Cotswolds remains uncertain.
