A community is in mourning after a tragic incident involving a bounce house resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy during a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game on Friday night. Charles County officials released a statement on Saturday providing details about the incident.

According to the statement, 911 calls were made around 9:21 p.m. from the Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. Reports indicated that a bounce house had gone airborne with children inside. A gust of wind lifted the bounce house approximately 15 to 20 feet into the air, causing the children to fall out before it landed on the playing field.

Emergency medical services personnel, who were already at the stadium for the game, along with trainers from the baseball team and volunteer first responders, immediately began treating the injured children. A 5-year-old boy was airlifted by Maryland State Police helicopter to Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, told NBC Washington.

Another child was also transported by helicopter to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to county officials. “We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time,” said Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. “We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care.”

In response to the tragedy, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announced the cancellation of Saturday’s game and all related baseball activities. Courtney Knichel, General Manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, expressed the organization’s condolences, saying, “Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.” This tragic event has left the community and all those involved heartbroken as they come together to support the affected families during this incredibly difficult time.
