29-year-old Woman’s One-Night Stand at Friend’s Wedding Leads to Surprise Twins After Morning After Pill Failure

A 29-year-old Scottish woman discovered her one-night stand at a wedding led to an unexpected double blessing after her morning-after pill failed due to a little-known medical reason. Holly Firth, a bank employee, gave birth to identical twin girls in February 2025 after a fleeting encounter at a friend’s wedding in July 2024.

Holly took the emergency contraceptive pill the next day, believing it would prevent pregnancy. But two weeks later, nausea from her office air freshener prompted her to take a test. “I was shocked,” she said after learning she was pregnant on August 7, 2024. A six-week scan initially revealed one baby, but a follow-up appointment confirmed twins.

“I burst into tears. It was just utter shock,” Holly told the Daily Record. “I went back two weeks later and found out there were twins. I was single and didn’t know the guy. But I told my parents, ‘It means double the love.’ I knew then it was meant to be.”

Doctors later explained that the morning-after pill is less effective if taken after ovulation—something Holly hadn’t been told when obtaining it. “My period was due the day after the wedding, so I’d definitely already ovulated,” she said. “That’s why it didn’t work.”

Her daughters, Charlotte and Rose, arrived five weeks early via planned C-section on February 27, 2025, weighing 4lb 12oz and 4lb 8oz, respectively. Though the twins’ father chose not to be involved, Holly says the “door will always be open” if he ever reconsiders.

Now a single mother, Holly embraces her unexpected journey. “I wasn’t planning to get pregnant—I’d been single for four years,” she admitted. “But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Meeting them for the first time, I felt a love I’d never known. We’ll be the three musketeers forever.”

Her story has sparked discussions about contraception awareness, with Holly urging others to seek full medical advice. “I’d taken the pill before without issue, so I assumed it would work,” she said. “Now I know—it’s not foolproof.”

Despite the challenges, Holly remains grateful. “However, they came into my life, they’re my miracles,” she said. “And if the girls ever want to know their dad, I’ll support that. Their happiness is all that matters.”
