How Meghan Markle deals with ‘online hate’ and protects her mental health

Meghan Markle is prioritizing her peace. Speaking candidly at the TIME100 Summit in New York City on April 23, the Duchess of Sussex opened up about how she manages the intense scrutiny that surrounds her public and personal life.

“I’ve made a very, very conscious effort to create boundaries for myself and for my mental health, for my well-being and certainly to role model that as well for my children,” Meghan, 43, told TIME CEO Jessica Sibley during their conversation.

Now a mother to two young children—Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3—Meghan said her commitment to setting healthy boundaries has only deepened. “I’m conscious of not just raising a very strong and confident young woman, but also having a son,” she explained. “It starts with whatever is going on internally.”

The Duchess admitted that she steers clear of reading public commentary or online reactions to her various projects, which include her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, her lifestyle brand As Ever, and her latest podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. By choosing not to immerse herself in digital opinions, she’s created a space that allows her to focus on purpose-driven work without distraction, told people.

Quoting comedian Tina Fey, Meghan added a touch of humor to her point: “If you ever start to feel good about yourself, they have this thing called the internet… and you can find a lot of people there who don’t like you.”

That wit, coupled with a steady commitment to self-care, formed the backbone of her remarks, striking a chord with the audience and offering insight into how she copes with being one of the most talked-about women in the world.

Meghan’s remarks come at a time when the spotlight on her family has intensified once again, as she and Prince Harry continue to grow their independent media and philanthropic endeavors in the U.S. Despite the noise that often surrounds their every move, Meghan made it clear that staying grounded is her top priority.

In an age of relentless online commentary and high-profile public roles, her message resonated with many: taking control of your narrative begins with protecting your mental well-being.

While she didn’t directly address any recent headlines or controversies, her words painted a picture of a woman focused not on public approval but on setting an example of resilience and intentionality for the next generation, starting at home.
