33-Year-Old Alabama Mother Allegedly Shot Her One-Year-Old Daughter by Accident

A 33-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday morning after authorities said she accidentally shot her one-year-old daughter in their Mobile home. Joli Erin Reid was booked into Mobile Metro Jail just before 9 a.m. on a first-degree assault charge following the early morning incident.

Police confirmed the toddler suffered a non-life-threatening graze wound to her arm. According to the police report, officers responded to the 6900 block of Dickens Ferry Road around 4:50 a.m. on April 15, 2025, after receiving reports of a juvenile gunshot victim.

Upon arrival, they found the injured child and determined the shooting appeared accidental. “This remains an active investigation,” authorities stated. “No further information will be released at this time”, shared a statement with AL.com.

The child received medical treatment for what was described as a superficial wound. While police have not disclosed how the firearm discharged, neighbors expressed shock at the incident in what they described as a normally quiet residential area.

“First-degree assault charges in accidental discharge cases involving children are not uncommon,” said local defense attorney Mark Stephens, who is not involved in the case. “Prosecutors will likely examine whether proper firearm safety measures were followed.”

Mobile Police Department records show Reid had no prior arrests in the county. Child Protective Services has been notified as part of standard protocol in cases involving minor victims.

The incident has reignited discussions about firearm safety in homes with young children. According to Alabama law, gun owners can face criminal charges if negligence leads to injury, even in accidental cases.

The wounded child is reportedly recovering with family members. Reid remains in custody awaiting her initial court appearance. Bond has not yet been set.

Authorities urge gun owners to secure firearms and follow safety protocols, especially in households with children. The investigation continues as detectives work to determine the exact circumstances of the shooting.
