Thousands gathered on the South Lawn of the White House as Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted the annual Easter Egg Roll on Monday, a long-standing tradition dating back to 1878. The festive occasion included games, performances, and a colorful egg-rolling competition for kids, but it came against a backdrop of global news and political controversy.
The event was held on the same day the death of Pope Francis was officially confirmed, though the Trumps did not directly reference the pontiff during their public remarks. In his speech, President Trump took a moment to thank the National Park Service for their efforts in preparing the White House grounds.

“I also want to thank the National Park Service for the job they do in making everything so beautiful and spiffy,” Trump said. “And I am very difficult when it comes to that, I will tell you. Very, very difficult. I will say they have done an incredible job. You just have to look around and see.”
His remarks followed a recent court order to reinstate 1,000 National Park Service employees, who had been previously let go under DOGE, the Elon Musk-led restructuring initiative. According to the order, the workers would return to posts at parks across the U.S.

On Truth Social, Trump claimed over 40,000 people would attend and emphasized that “ALL FUNDS, EVERY DIME, GO DIRECTLY TO THE WHITE HOUSE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION.” Reports confirmed that children at the event would enjoy traditional egg rolls, dress up as Founding Fathers, and sign a mini Declaration of Independence, part of a campaign marking the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and presidential envoy Keith Kellogg were among those reading stories to the children. Meanwhile, companies like Amazon, Meta, and YouTube joined the event as sponsors—an apparent move to build goodwill with the Trump administration.

In a gesture of support, the American Egg Board donated 30,000 eggs. Emily Metz, the board’s CEO, addressed criticism over egg costs, saying, “We feel like we need to take a moment to celebrate where we can, and you cannot have Easter without eggs and you cannot have the White House Easter Egg Roll without real eggs.”
Despite the cheerful setting, Trump didn’t hold back politically. In a fiery Easter post, he lashed out at his opponents, judges, and President Biden, whom he accused of orchestrating an “Open Borders Policy” and labeled “our WORST and most Incompetent President.”
