A heartbroken family has paid tribute to their “best little boy” after their seven-month-old son, Tommy Taylor-Mclean, tragically died on the first day of a long-awaited family holiday to St Lucia.
Tommy was rushed to St Jude Hospital in Vieux Fort after falling from a bed during the first day of the trip on April 2. Initially, he appeared to be fine, but his condition quickly deteriorated. Doctors later discovered he had suffered a bleed on the brain, and despite their best efforts, Tommy tragically passed away.
Details of the heartbreaking incident were heard during a hearing at East London Coroner’s Court, which opened on April 9 following the repatriation of Tommy’s body to the UK, as told to The Mirror.
Senior coroner Graeme Irvine offered his condolences to Tommy’s devastated parents, Hannah and Matt. “It seems to me this is a tragic set of circumstances, and I want to offer my condolences to Tommy’s parents for their tragic loss,” he said.
He also voiced concern over the lack of a criminal investigation in St Lucia, stating: “That causes me real concern. It seems to me it will cause significant upset to the family, and I’m very, very sorry for that.”

In the wake of their loss, Tommy’s parents launched a fundraiser in memory of their son to help improve the paediatric facilities at the hospital that cared for him. The hospital has been operating without full surgical and paediatric wards since a devastating fire in 2009.
“Sadly, on the first day of our family holiday in St. Lucia, our precious 7-month-old son, Tommy, passed away following a tragic accident,” wrote Hannah and Matt in a touching tribute. “He was the best little boy and brought so much joy and happiness to everyone that met him.”
“In Tommy’s honour, we have decided to raise funds for St Jude Hospital… where Tommy was cared for with such compassion by wonderful doctors. In particular, Medical Director, Doctor Adelaide Moonie.”
So far, the fundraiser has raised over £13,000 of its £25,000 target. “We would love to raise money for the paediatric ward to be able to help other children. Sadly, our baby boy Tommy lost his life, but we would love to try and help save other children and babies in the future, in our precious son’s honour.” A full inquest into Tommy’s death is scheduled for November 24, pending additional post-mortem reports.
