Austin Nichols admits kissing Mary-Kate Olsen felt totally weird on set

Austin Nichols is looking back at one of his early roles and opening up about a moment that still makes him cringe a little.

The actor, known for shows like One Tree Hill and The Walking Dead, recently talked about filming Holiday in the Sun, where he played Griffen Grayson opposite Mary-Kate Olsen’s character Madison Stewart.

During an episode of the Drama Queens podcast, Austin admitted he felt super awkward during their on-screen kiss. At the time, he was around 18, 19, or possibly even 20 years old — and Mary-Kate was only 15.

“I was definitely nervous because Mary-Kate was 15, and I was, I think, 18 or 19, or maybe even 20,” he said. “I don’t remember, but I was too old. And it felt weird, and it felt wrong.”

Austin said he looked younger than he was, tall and skinny with a nerdy vibe, so watching it back, the age gap doesn’t really jump out. “But from my brain, I was like, ‘She’s 15. This is weird.’”

He was so uneasy about the kiss that he didn’t just go along with it. He checked in with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s dad, David, as well as the film’s producers, to make sure everything was okay and that everyone was on the same page.

Even though the movie was a lighthearted family romance, that scene clearly stuck with Austin for a reason. Looking back now, he’s able to laugh about it, but the experience clearly made an impression.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes stories that reminds fans how different things can feel on set compared to what ends up on screen.
