In a move that’s already sending shockwaves across the political landscape, President Donald Trump has floated the possibility of seeking a third term, despite the constitutional two-term limit—and insists he’s “not joking.”
In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Trump made the eyebrow-raising suggestion during a Sunday morning phone call, casually hinting that there are “methods” to remain in power beyond the traditional limit.

“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said, referring to his close allies and supporters.
“But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
Though he claimed it’s “too early” to think seriously about it, the 45th—and possibly 47th—president made it clear this isn’t some offhand remark.
“I like working,” he said when asked if he wanted another term.
“I’m not joking.”
When pressed on how he might legally pursue a third term, Trump responded cryptically:
“There are methods which you could do it.”
He then hinted at one controversial possibility: having Vice President JD Vance run and, after winning, transfer power back to Trump.
“That’s one,” Trump confirmed, adding, “But there are others too.” When asked for details, he refused to elaborate: “No.”
Currently, the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms. Changing that would require a two-thirds majority in Congress or agreement from two-thirds of state legislatures to call a constitutional convention—followed by ratification from three-quarters of all states. In other words: a monumental political and legal mountain to climb.
Still, Trump insists there’s demand for it.
“A lot of people would like me to,” he said, pointing to strong poll numbers and growing support within the GOP base.
Indeed, the buzz around a potential third term isn’t just coming from Trump himself. Republican Representative Andy Ogles has introduced a resolution to extend presidential term limits, while longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon boldly predicted that Trump will “run and win again in 2028.”
If that weren’t enough to stir the pot, the White House social media team stoked the fire by posting an image of Trump wearing a gold crown, alongside the caption:
“LONG LIVE THE KING!”
The post sparked outrage and mockery in equal measure, with critics calling it a “dictator fantasy” and supporters hailing it as symbolic of Trump’s “unstoppable return.”

While the logistics of a third term remain constitutionally far-fetched, Trump’s comments are a clear signal: he’s not stepping off the stage any time soon. And whether you view it as bravado or a serious political trial balloon, one thing’s certain—he’s not ruling anything out.
