Rep. Randy Weber Seeks Censure Against Crockett Over Governor Abbott Remarks

Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) announced he intends to introduce a resolution to censure fellow Texan Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) after she made controversial remarks about Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Crockett sparked backlash by referring to Abbott, who is wheelchair-bound, as “Gov. Hot Wheels.”

Speaking at the Human Rights Campaign banquet in Los Angeles, Crockett criticized the conservative governor, stating, “You all know we got Gov. Hot Wheels down there. Come on, now. And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-a– mess, honey.”

Her comments immediately drew condemnation from critics, including Fox News digital reporter Liz Elkind, who described Crockett’s statements as “unbecoming of a Member of Congress” and characterized them as “discriminatory in nature.”

In response, Weber vowed to introduce a formal censure resolution against Crockett, arguing that her remarks crossed the line of acceptable political discourse. This potential censure would add Crockett’s name to a list of lawmakers who have recently faced similar formal reprimands, told Axios.

Since 2021, there have been multiple censures in the House of Representatives. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) faced censure after posting an anime video depicting violence against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Since Republicans gained control of the House in 2023, four Democrats have been censured. Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was censured after yelling and shaking his cane at President Donald Trump during a congressional address.

Former Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) faced censure after claiming Trump benefited from Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) was censured for employing a controversial anti-Israel slogan, while Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) received a censure for improperly triggering a fire alarm.

The proposed censure against Crockett highlights increasing tensions within Congress and the political implications of lawmakers’ public comments. Supporters of Weber’s move argue that elected officials must maintain a higher standard of decorum, while critics contend that the censure process is becoming overly politicized.

As Weber prepares to bring his censure resolution forward, the issue is likely to fuel further partisan debate and spotlight ongoing divisions regarding appropriate political rhetoric among U.S. lawmakers.
