BAYTOWN, Texas — A 14-year-old girl was fatally shot four times by a 13-year-old male classmate at a playground in Baytown, authorities confirmed. The victim, Anaya Zachary, was playing outside her apartment complex when the attack occurred.
According to Zachary’s godmother, Sonya Stanford, the two teens had a strained relationship. “Never did get along,” Stanford told reporters. She described Zachary as a kind-hearted honor roll student who was respectful and well-mannered. “Never had no problems,” Stanford said. “‘Yes ma’am, no ma’am, thank you, no thank you’ — this was a sweet baby.”

Police believe the shooting stemmed from a minor dispute on the school bus earlier that day. After getting off the bus, both teens went to their respective homes. Moments later, Zachary asked permission to play outside. Stanford said the boy returned dressed in all black, wearing a mask, and armed with a gun, told WSTM.
He called Zachary’s name before firing four shots. She was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The godmother insisted Zachary had never bullied the boy, according to classmates, but acknowledged the two “just simply didn’t like each other.” Both attended Baytown Junior Middle School.
Stanford expressed deep sorrow and frustration, addressing the boy’s parents: “You should have put your weapon up so your 13-year-old son wouldn’t have gotten this gun and shot my child. I am very hurt. I am very disappointed.” Yet, in a moment of compassion, she directly addressed the shooter: “I’m not angry with you. I’m not upset with you.

But I want you to know that I forgive you as of tonight, and I put you into the hands of the Lord.” The 13-year-old suspect was taken into custody, though charges remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. A growing memorial at the playground stands as a heartbreaking tribute to Zachary, while her family struggles with an unimaginable loss. Baytown police pledged to release further details as the case unfolds.
