WASHINGTON—The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has recently aligned with President Donald Trump and his allies, is now pushing back after Trump made controversial remarks about Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who is Jewish.
During a Wednesday meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the Oval Office, Trump launched an attack on Schumer while discussing the U.S. corporate tax rate. The former president accused congressional Democrats of opposing his agenda and claimed they were disconnected from the American public. He also criticized them for not reacting positively to parts of his recent address to Congress.

“Schumer is a Palestinian as far as I’m concerned. He’s become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He’s not Jewish anymore. He’s a Palestinian,” Trump said. Schumer, who has no Palestinian heritage, did not respond directly, but the remark quickly drew backlash from civil rights organizations.
“President Trump’s use of the term ‘Palestinian’ as a racial slur is offensive and beneath the dignity of his office,” said Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
The ADL also condemned the statement, posting on X: “A President has many powers, but none of them include deciding who is and isn’t Jewish. Doing so, and using ‘Palestinian’ as a slur, are both beneath any @POTUS. Instead of weaponizing people’s identity, use the power of the bully pulpit to bring the American people together.”

The organization’s forceful response comes amid mounting criticism for its perceived reluctance to hold Trump and his allies accountable in other instances. The ADL notably refrained from condemning X owner Elon Musk after he made a salute at a Trump rally that many interpreted as a Nazi gesture. The group also faced backlash for endorsing an executive order that led to the arrest of a Palestinian activist involved in organizing Columbia University protests against Israel.
As scrutiny of its political stance intensifies, the ADL’s handling of Trump’s remarks could signal a shift in its approach. However, the organization continues to navigate a complex and often polarized political landscape, balancing its historical mission with contemporary challenges.
