Stephen Miller, former Deputy Chief of Staff to Donald Trump, continues to wield significant influence both inside and outside the White House through his legal advocacy group, America First Legal (AFL). The group, known for aggressively suing the Biden administration, has now shifted its focus under Trump’s presidency—this time targeting corporations and even the Trump administration itself.
According to Axios, Miller has positioned himself as a key policy architect within Trump’s White House, while AFL is actively shaping policy from the outside through legal complaints and lawsuits. “The law group is a key part of Miller’s larger mission to make diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs illegal across the country—based on the argument that they violate the civil rights of white people,” Axios reported.

Miller, a longtime Trump adviser, has been a vocal opponent of DEI initiatives, arguing that they discriminate against white Americans. America First Legal has been at the forefront of this legal battle, filing lawsuits to challenge DEI programs in corporations and federal agencies.
“In recent weeks America First Legal has been aggressively filing complaints and lawsuits to try to make the federal bureaucracy comply with the new president’s executive orders,” Axios noted. The group has also been using petitions to pressure government agencies into action.

“In early February, the group petitioned the Department of Education to investigate five school districts in Virginia for allegedly not complying with Title IX, which does not allow sex-based discrimination,” the report states. “Less than two weeks later, the Civil Rights office of the Education Department announced it was opening an investigation into the school districts.”
Notably, America First Legal has not shied away from targeting Trump’s own administration. “Late last month, America First Legal petitioned the Labor Department to investigate whether outside federal contractors were in compliance with Trump’s executive order banning federal contractors and subcontractors from ‘allowing or encouraging … workforce balancing based on race, color, sex, sexual preference, religion, or national origin,'” Axios reported.

The group specifically called for investigations into major corporations, including Lyft, Meta, Paramount, and Twilio. Miller’s dual role—as both a White House insider shaping policy and the leader of a legal group challenging government actions—raises questions about the blurred lines between political strategy and legal warfare. With AFL continuing its legal battles under Trump’s leadership, it remains to be seen how far its influence will extend in shaping national policy.
