Marjorie Taylor Greene Backs Trump Proposal to Rename Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America’
Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wasted no time following through on her promise to support President Donald Trump’s latest proposal: renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” The controversial suggestion was made during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, where Trump elaborated on his reasoning.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Trump said. “That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
Shortly after his announcement, Greene took to X (formerly Twitter) to endorse the idea and vowed to make it official. “President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” Greene posted. “I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”
In a follow-up post on Tuesday afternoon, Greene shared the text of her proposed legislation, declaring it would be ready for filing by Thursday morning. She framed the name change as a necessary step to address what she described as security and sovereignty issues. Greene accused the Mexican government of allowing cartels to exploit the gulf for illegal activities such as human trafficking and drug smuggling, reported the Washington Times.
“The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries,” Greene wrote. “It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America, and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as.”
According to Greene, her legislation would require all references to the “Gulf of Mexico” in federal laws, maps, and documents to be updated to reflect the new name. The bill also tasks the Commerce secretary, acting through the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with overseeing the renaming process. Federal agencies would have six months to update all relevant documents and materials.
Greene concluded her remarks by urging Congress to act quickly. “We already have the bill written by the legislative council and are ready to file it first thing Thursday morning. Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously, and that means acting fast to enact it.” The proposal has already sparked intense debate, with critics calling it a distraction and supporters touting it as a patriotic move.
