The 52-year-old star explained her personal rules for filming intimate scenes, admitting that she’s always been clear about “barring nudity at any cost” when it comes to portraying sexually explicit content on screen. “I’ve always wanted to separate the character from myself,” Pinkett Smith shared, discussing how she navigates intimate scenes while maintaining a strong sense of herself.
Her candid reflection on-screen intimacy comes after years of successful roles in both television and film. “I’ve always wanted to show all the different multifaceted ways in which a Black woman can exist,” Pinkett Smith explained. She noted the difficulty of avoiding the typical pigeonholes often imposed on Black actresses, adding that she strives to portray the vast and diverse experiences of Black womanhood through her work.
“It’s very easy to pigeonhole all of us,” she said, continuing, “But I’ve always wanted to really express the expansiveness of the soul through film and television and eventually music.” Pinkett Smith’s desire to show the “heart, the spirit, and the soul of Black womanhood” has guided her career choices and continues to inspire her current projects.
