The long-standing speculation surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs’ alleged involvement in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder has resurfaced once again. Speaking to NewsNation on Friday, October 4, Tupac’s murder investigator, Sheryl McCollum, revisited the events that she believes set the stage for the rapper’s eventual death.

McCollum stated, “This whole thing to me started in 1994 — the first time Tupac was shot.” She was referring to the incident at New York City’s Quad Studios, where Tupac was ambushed and shot five times while in an elevator. At the time, Diddy and his entourage of about 40 people were in the studio.

McCollum expressed skepticism over the claim that the shooting was merely a robbery attempt, questioning why Tupac alone was targeted while Diddy’s large crew remained untouched. “You ain’t gotta shoot somebody five times to take their jewelry,” she remarked, implying that it was an attempted murder rather than a robbery.

Tupac survived the shooting, despite sustaining five gunshot wounds, including one to the head. However, two years later, he was not as fortunate; he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996, a case that remains unsolved to this day.

In a 1995 interview with Vibe magazine, Tupac seemed to implicate Diddy, Biggie Smalls, and their label, Bad Boy Records. “Puffy was there, Biggie… there was about 40 n****s there. All of them had jewels on. More jewels than me,” Tupac reflected, recalling the night at Quad Studios. He described entering the studio, covered in blood but noted that no one present appeared surprised. “Nobody approached me. I noticed that nobody would look at me,” he said.

Despite the case remaining unsolved, it was reopened following the 2023 arrest of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, who reportedly confessed that Diddy ordered a $1 million hit on Tupac. This development has prompted Tupac’s family to launch their own private investigation, with the goal of filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Diddy, according to TMZ and Page Six.

Additionally, The Sun reported that the same federal agents who previously put Diddy behind bars for alleged sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy are now collaborating with prosecutors working on Tupac’s case. They are said to be “collating information” as they continue to investigate the rapper’s murder, reigniting the controversy surrounding one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries.
