MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski expressed skepticism about Melania Trump’s recently announced support for women’s reproductive rights, which the former first lady details in her upcoming memoir. Melania passionately defends a woman’s right to abortion, claiming it’s a belief she’s held throughout her adult life, but Brzezinski seemed unconvinced.

“Mrs. Trump proclaims she is a passionate supporter of a woman’s right to control her own body, including the right to abortion,” Brzezinski said on Morning Joe. She cited the former first lady’s assertion from her book, stating, “It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government.”

Melania also reportedly supports the right to later-term abortions, which she argues are rare and typically occur when severe medical conditions threaten the life of the mother or result in a stillbirth. However, Brzezinski pointed out that NBC News had not independently verified the memoir’s content and questioned why Melania hadn’t spoken up about these views sooner.

“Kind of wish she might have said something to him, maybe,” Brzezinski remarked, implying that Melania’s pro-choice stance stands in stark contrast to her husband, Donald Trump’s, political positions.

Joanna Coles, chief content officer of The Daily Beast, added a quip, saying Melania had demonstrated control over her own life by moving back to New York City without her husband to focus on their son’s education. Frequent contributor Katty Kay pointed out the irony in Melania’s apolitical stance, considering her newfound alignment with pro-choice views.

“It’s worth pointing out that one of the most pro-choice groups in the United States at the moment is young men under the age of 40,” Kay said, referring to their involvement in recent referendums in states like Kentucky, Kansas, and Ohio, where voters rejected restrictions on abortion. Kay suggested Melania’s views reflect the general population’s, but not her husband’s politics.

Brzezinski also noted Melania’s absence from the campaign trail, alongside Ivanka Trump. The co-host expressed doubt about the timing of Melania’s comments, seeing them more as a way to promote her book. “I’m skeptical,” Brzezinski said, crossing her arms.

Coles echoed the sentiment, pointing out the vacuum left by the Trump family women’s absence, which figures like Laura Loomer have tried to fill. “It’s a great way to sell books,” Coles added. “Yeah,” Brzezinski sighed, “Skeptical.”
