Meghan Markle has never shied away from speaking out for a good cause, and the mother-of-two has now written a heartfelt letter in favor of parental leave.

In a letter shared on Paid Leave For All, the Duchess of Sussex expressed her feelings of being “overjoyed and overwhelmed” after having her baby girl Lilibet Diana.

Meghan stepped into politics with a passionate letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, stating that paid leave is important for all American parents.

Meghan began her appeal by stating that she was writing “as a mom” and that she and Prince Harry were not “confronted with the harsh reality “ of having to choose between spending time with Lili and working when she was born.

Speaking about Lili’s arrival, Meghan wrote: ‘Like any parents, we were overjoyed. Like many parents, we were overwhelmed. Like fewer parents, we weren’t confronted with the harsh reality of either spending those first few critical months with our baby or going back to work.

‘We knew we could take her home, and in that vital (and sacred) stage, devote any and everything to our kids and to our family. We knew that by doing so we wouldn’t have to make impossible choices about childcare, work, and medical care that so many have to make every single day.’

The mum-of-two added: ‘No family should have to choose between earning a living and having the freedom to take care of their child.’

Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex believes it’s time for #PaidLeaveforAll. In a powerful letter to Congress, she’s standing up for millions of American families who need and deserve guaranteed paid leave.

Meghan also talked about her childhood, noting that she “grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler” and knew how special it was to eat out because her parents worked hard to make both ends meet.

She went on to say that even while she was making money, most of it was spent on necessities like paying the rent and filling up the car with fuel, rather than the ‘luxury’ of saving.

Meghan signed off the letter by saying she was writing on behalf of her family, ‘Archie and Lili and Harry’ – and urging the US politicians to ‘put families above politics’.

Meghan’s personal letter comes after she and Harry went to New York City to support another worthy cause, the Global Citizen Live Concert event.
