DALLAS – Police documents explain why a child endangerment charge against a Dallas mother whose 3-year-old son was shot in the head has been updated to manslaughter.
Lacravionne Washington, 26, is accused of lying about a road rage incident after driving 3-year-old Jalexus Washington to a Dallas hospital last month.
According to police, the gun used to kill Jalexus was in her car, and she attempted to conceal it. When she lied to her husband about the road rage incident, she allegedly told him she was the one who fired the gun, as per reported by Dallas news.
The new information explains a timeline that led police to believe Lacravionne shot and killed Jalexus, but it remains unclear where the shooting occurred.
Lacravionne is accused of “recklessly killing” her 3-year-old son, who died from a gunshot wound, according to Dallas police. According to police, she tried to get rid of the gun and faked a road rage incident.
Arrest records made public on Monday shed some light on why Lacravionne is now charged with manslaughter after being arrested on child endangerment and evidence tampering charges.
Washington, according to the arrest warrant, drove her son to Medical City Dallas on March 28. He had a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
According to a witness, Lacravionne tried to cover up something under her shirt as she exited her car.
Lacravionne’s 4-year-old daughter, who was unrestrained in the car with her siblings at the time, told detectives she saw her mother hand a gun to her father.
The gun found inside the car was not the one used to shoot Jalexus, according to police.
According to police, the gun used to shoot Jalexus was discovered on his father when he was arrested for outstanding warrants and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Lacravionne initially told police she was the victim of a road rage incident in which two shots were fired. She claimed to have found a gun in the glove compartment and reached for it, but she never fired it.
An autopsy revealed that Jalexus died from a gunshot wound at “close range,” and that he was not hit by a bullet from another car.
When the boy’s father was interviewed by police, he stated that Lacravionne told him about the road rage incident as well. Her version to him, however, appeared to be different. According to that version, she told him she “fired back” at another driver. He also admitted to police that she handed him the gun wrapped in a cloth and advised him to hide it.
Last week, police updated Lacravionne’s charges to manslaughter based on the evidence.
However, questions about what happened in the car remain unanswered, including whether Lacravionne actually pulled the trigger herself or if she’s covering that up as well.
It could be a long time before we find out what happened in that car on March 28.
Lacravionne is still put in jail. We’ve been told that if she’s released on bond, she’ll be placed with an electronic monitoring device.
