Sharon Stone would fly into an exclusive group with an Emmy win

If Sharon Stone’s guest role on “The Flight Attendant” finds favor with voters this year, she might join a select group of stars who have won both comedy and drama guest actress categories. Sharon Stone earned the Best Drama Guest Actress Emmy for “The Practice” in 2004.

Only two women, Cloris Leachman and Elaine Stritch have managed to dominate both comedy and drama since the current guest categories were established in 1989 (prior to this, the guest awards weren’t genre-specific until 1986, when the Emmys gave out gender-neutral “guest performer” statuettes in drama and comedy for three years).

Leachman won two comedy guest actress awards in 2002 and 2006 for “Malcolm in the Middle” and a drama guest actress award in 1998 for “Promised Land” (she also shared the opening ceremony guest actress prize with Zohra Lampert from “Kojak” in 1975 for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” back when the category was called Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series”). For “Law & Order” in 1993 and “30 Rock” in 2007, Stritch has one win in each category.

Since she was cast in the HBO Max series, Stone had been expected as a possible nominee. The Oscar actress portrays Lisa, Cassie’s (Kaley Cuoco) estranged mother. Their reunion in the sixth episode, “Brothers & Sisters,” is everything but happy as the two dumps on one another years’ worth of repressed anger and frustration.

Lisa is not having it when Cassie apologizes for being a “dysfunctional, drunken teenager” and a “sh-ty daughter,” having already been burnt too many times by her. Cassie, honey, I love you, she exclaims as she cups Cassie’s face. I do. But, I don’t like you, at all.” Then, without warning, the deadly blow: an unexpected, brutal slap across Cassie’s face.

“We got the money take. That’s her Emmy win right there,” Cuoco recalled on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in April of the first of three slaps she endured from Stone.

In terms of the odds, Stone is currently in eighth place, two slots down from the top spot in the six-person roster that may be dominated by “Hacks” guest stars. Only Murders in the Building’s Jane Lynch is in the first place, followed by Hacks’ Laurie Metcalf,

The Great’s Gillian Anderson, Saturday Night Live’s Ariana DeBose, Hacks’ Harriet Walter, and Hacks’ Jane Adams. In 7th grade, Tracey Ullman (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) lives. However, the guest categories are prone to name-dropping, so Stone cannot be ruled out. If she is selected, she would certainly beat out her competitors.
