Gucci group has announced that Sarah Burton will succeed Alexander McQueen as the lines new head designer. McQueen 40, was discovered dead in a closet in his London apartment in February as final preparations were being made for his spring collection in Paris.
Sarah Burton was McQueen’s first assistant. She joined McQueen’s company in 1996, just after a year of graduation from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Most recently she was the head of design for Women’s wear. The parent company Gucci Group, which took 51% share in the company in 200, said that because Burton worked so closely with McQueen she has “the vision necessary to take it forward”.
